Paper Sculpture

Paper sculpture has been around nearly as long as paper has existed. I was inspired by Leo Monahan. I have one of his sculptures and have been admiring it for years. Finally with the idea of a rowboat as a metaphor for our lives, my first attempt began. Some paper is painted, some just folded, embossed, scored, or cut with an exacto knife. Some precolored papers are also used.

  • The Sower

    SOLD

  • Peacock

The peacock was a symbol of eternal life that Christian artists and artisans used in the middle ages.  This example took a few months to complete. I finally found that Daniel Smith iridescent paint on black paper provided the look I was after for the large feathers.

  • As a Hen Gathers Her Chicks

Paper Sculpture 18x24" 2 and 3 ply Strathmore Bristol with acryllic paint, colored paper and watercolor background.

  • Lamb of God

With the freely given sacrifice of the Lamb of God, the Messiah, The Christ, the justice of God was satisfied so that the mercy and grace of God will flow freely to us, who are unworthy, undeserving sinners of the world.

There is no painting in this sculpture. Its all various papers. 30x30' background in a shadow box frame.

  • Legendary Pelican

There is a pre-Christian legend of the Pelican punctuing its side and letting the chicks survive on its blood in times of famine. Early Christians adopted this as a symbol of Christ

The circle is watercolor, there are some other parts painted with acrylics. It is 30x30" square in a shadow box frame.

  • Will Your Anchor Hold

I bought a painting of a row boat from Thomas Schaller. What attracted me to it was the idea of the boat as a metaphor for our lives. That idea has been in my mind since taking a short class on the Irish story, The Voyage of Saint Brendan taught by Kim Starr Reid. The anchor has been a Christian symbol from the early days of the church. It was found in the Catacombs in Rome. Clement of Rome was said to have been martyred by having an anchor tied around his neck and thrown into the sea. Hebrews 6:19 "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm, and secure"

It is 29x37" in a shadow box frame
